										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Do you sometimes have tightness or unexplained pain in your neck?</strong></p>
<p>You are not alone. Among adults, 20% &#8211; 70% experience neck pain that interferes with daily activities as well as their ability to sleep.</p>
<p><em>In Lindsey Bever’s Washington Post article, she states:</em></p>
<p><em>“The human head weighs about a dozen pounds. But as the neck bends forward and down, the weight on the cervical spine begins to increase. At a 15-degree angle, this weight is about 27 pounds, at 30 degrees it’</em><em>s 40 pounds, at 45 degrees it</em><em>’</em><em>s 49 pounds, and at 60 degrees it’s 60 pounds.”</em></p>
<p>Who knew that looking at a smart phone could put so much pressure on your neck? There’s no question that people with smartphones can spend several hours a day in a hunched over position. While I don’t enjoy texting, it’s sometimes necessary and I have friends who frequently play games on a smartphone!  This ‘forward head’ habit impacts people of all ages.</p>
<p><em>Bever states: “Medical experts have been warning people for years. Some say for every inch the head tilts forward, the pressure on the spine doubles.”</em></p>
<p><strong><em>STEPS YOU CAN TAKE:</em></strong></p>
<p><em>1. </em>Counteract the head forward posture aka &#8216;tech neck&#8217; by lengthening and re-aligning the spine so that you are neutrally balanced.</p>
<p>2. This properly stacks the bones to hold your head and natural curves in line with gravity.</p>
<p>3. We’ll talk more about this in my next post. In the meantim<em>e, <strong>try to hold the phone at eye level or prop it while listening with earbuds or use ‘speaker.’</strong></em></p>
